Best of Columbus 2010

Welcome to the 2010 Liberty Monthly Best of Columbus Guide, the second annual issue where we turn to you, our beloved Liberty Monthly readers, to select your favorites and choose the best Columbus has to offer. After months of campaigning, weeks of ballot casting and a what felt like a gazillion hours of ballot counting, we’re happy to bring you the results in 40 categories that you all deem your favorites. All the usual suspects are here — best finer dining, best bartender, best bbq and best bar. Being only the second year, patterns have already began to form – 4th Street Bar & Grill swept many categories and Best Pizza wasn’t even a contest. That’s not to say this year’s results are the same as last year. Many categories have new winners this year and different categories ran a closer race than last time. A couple new categories were added in order to bring some attention to new people and places and a new section was added. Sparkle Car wash is the first to win in the best car wash category, and “EOS” by Dessa Kirk is our first best public art installation winner while Union Blues pulled rank as the best band.

The biggest difference you’ll see this year is to focus on what you voted on as your favorites. This year it’s all about where and who matter most to you – Liberty Monthly editors didn’t choose their favorites this year, we just wrote short reasons why the winners won. Some places we agreed with and know why they won – others we didn’t have a frame of reference, so we asked other people to help out – and many did. While there were a few snags in the process this year the number was small in comparison to last year. Next year, the third year, new changes will be implemented and the process will be even smoother. Maybe, just maybe, in another couple of years and with more community input and comments no one will get upset or bent out shape – that’s probably not going to happen but, it’s a nice thought.

This year 2,224 ballots were cast and about 10% of you left comments. Many were about places not nominated, which happened in February, or categories that weren’t included. Other comments simply stated how great of place Columbus is to live and some even mentioned how they wished they hadn’t moved away. So get comfy and get busy reading. When you have a chance, congratulate the winners and support these local businesses, artists, events and efforts whenever you can. These are some of the folks who help our community a great place to call home. Thanks to a wonderful team of helpers who helped count paper ballots and to all of you that helped with category favorite write-ups. This Best of Columbus issue couldn’t have happened without you.

Slow cooked southern style cooked meats and sides served with personalized southern hospitality that you would normally expect further south. 2 | Baby Back Blues BBQ

BEST SWEET TREAT
Donuts N’ Coffee | 2222 State St | 812.376.2796
A Columbus staple, that I remember from my childhood, opening at 4 am and closing at noon offers some of the best donuts around. None of that mass produced freezer to fryer stuff here. Try one of their best sellers: Apple Critter, Sugar Cinnamon Twist or a Chocolate Longjohn. Start your day of right – with donuts n’ coffee.

2 | 240SWEET Artisan Marshmallows

BEST BREAKFAST
Dimitris Family Resta urant | 2315 W Jonathan Moore | 812.378.8881

It’s a family, diner-style restaurant featuring a good variety on the menu, with breakfast anytime. The service is snappy and pleasant. Good food, good value, quick service – what more could you ask for?

2 | Blackerby’s Hanger 5

BEST SANDWICH (DELI STYLE)
THE LETTERMAN, 4th Street Bar & Grill | 433 4th St | 812.376.7063
The 4th Street Bar & Grill Letterman sandwich is a Columbus gem. Packed full of ham, pepperoni, bacon and two layers, count em, two layers of mozzarella cheese served up warm on a crusty roll with an Italian Vinaigrette drizzle. It’s meaty, cheesy, tangy and down right yummy. Wonder why it’s called the Letterman? It doesn’t really matter – it’s that good!

2 | Papa ’s Deli

BEST BURGER
The Brick | 309 Walnut St,  Jonesville | 812.522.8636
Cooked to order, served fresh and dressed the way a burger should be – simple and to the point. Don’t expect fries or even a plate – because at The Brick you won’t get either. It’s all about cold beer and great burgers. Oh yea, watch your mouth and don’t drop an “f-bomb” cause you’ll be asked to leave and that would be sad.

2 | 4th Street Bar & Grill

BEST PIZZA
Zwanzigz Pizza | 1038 Lafayett e Ave | 812.376.0200

2 | 4th Street Bar & Grill

BEST MEXICAN
Mexico Viejo | 2520 Central Ave | 812.372.7144
A large menu selection to choose from. I definitely recommend the pablano pepper filled with cheese and topped with red sauce. This is a meal in its own… it is huge. You are promptly greeted with chips and salsa. With fast courteous service shouldn’t expect to wait long for your food.

2 | Casa Del sol

BEST ICE CREAM
Zaharakos | 329 Washington St | 812.378.1900
When you walk into Zaharako’s and notice the stained glass, carved oak, Mexican onyx soda fountain, and the Welte orchestrion, it is easy to forget that they also have outstanding ice cream. Made on-site with ultra-pure water, the highest quality dairy products, and topped with a wide array of delicious treats, Zaharako’s really delivers the best ice cream in the area.

BEST FINER DINING
Smith’s Row Food & Spirits | 418 4th St | 812.373.9382
When Emeril Lagasse says a restaurant is wonderful we should all take note and apparently we have. Smith’s Row makes the Best of Columbus list for the second year in a row – with great food, friendly service and attractive value it’s no surprise that Smith’s Row is visited often for celebration and nightly dining by Columbus area residents and traveling gourmands.

2 | Tre Bicchieri

BEST FISH SANDWICH
Ye Olde Fish House | 2024 17th St | 812.378.2921
The only thing as good as their fish sandwich is the friendly service you get at Ye Olde Fish House. This is no fish patty like you get in other restaurants. This is real fish, piled high on a bun, right before your eyes. Delicious!

2 | Power House Brewing Co.

BEST SALSA
Mexico Viejo | 2520 Central Ave | 812.372.7144

BEST CHINESE
Mark Pi’s | 2106 East 25th St (Fairoaks Mall) | 812.376.3388
When you enter Mark Pi’s Chinese Restaurant, you’ll be graciously greeted by the staff and escorted to your requested table. The atmosphere is both elegant and comfortable. Being a simple oriental foodie, my favorite dish is their Sweet and Sour Chicken with white rice and a side order of Hot and Sour Soup. Their Plum Wine is the best…sweet and potent with just enough zing to smooth the edges off a hectic day. When you go to Mark Pi’s take the time to enjoy all they have to offer and please don’t peck on the beautiful aquarium…the goldfish hate that.

2 | Yee Kee

BEST JUKEBOX
4th Street Bar & Grill | 433 4th St | 812.376.7063
It’s hard to say how the new internet based jukeboxes will change or alter the atmosphere of the each establishment they’re in. I guess only time will tell – until then you can play whatever you want at 4th Street Bar & Grill – at least until Kurt gets all the preferences set. Then it’s back to same genres, which won’t include death metal and vulgar rap.

2 | Ziggies

BEST PLACE FOR LIVE  MUSIC
4th Street Bar & Grill | 433 4th St | 812.376.7063
Small venue, intimate setting that can at times get a little loud and smoky. Local bands and artists come to play acoustic music on Thursday with live rock bands on Saturday night. Come early to get a seat up front or call ahead to reserve a table for your party because it’s been known to get busy with many of the good seats taken.

2 | The Crump

BEST WINE SELECTION
Smith’s Row | 418 4th St | 812.376.7063

2 | Tre Bicchieri

BEST BILLIARDS
Caddies | 2761 Central Avenue | 812.379.4653
With 13 pool tables the likely hood of finding a pool table is pretty good and if you can’t find a table lay out quarters and wait your turn at one of the many arcade games in the bar. Don’t like games, belly up at one the longest bars in the area, measuring 75 Feet! Open late during the week and until midnight on Sunday. Rack em’ up…

2 | Lags

BEST BARTENDER
Brian Gentry, 4th Street Bar & Grill | 433 4th St | 812.376.7063
Quick with a drink, a smoke and even a joke Brian, “B” to his regulars and friends, has been a bartender for several years and has firmly planted himself into the memories and drink induced haze of many 4th Street Bar patrons over the years. This being his second win, his mom is going to more proud than she was last year and she was pretty gosh darn proud!

2 | Bryan Gore, 4th Street Bar & Grill

BEST BAR
4th Street Bar & Grill | 433 4th St | 812.376.7063
For those of you “young” enough to remember the TV Show “Cheers,” that’s what the atmosphere is like at 4th Street Bar & Grill. The staff is always polite, they go that extra mile to please, and they always remember my name. Go in and sit at the bar, have your favorite drink and let the day’s worries fade away.

2 | Columbus Bar (Powerhouse Brewing Company)

BEST PLACE TO MEET PEOPLE
Bar |
People go to bars to have a good time, to socialize or maybe even to get the feel of their new town/city. Bars are easy places to meet people and more often than not many of the people you’ll meet are there for similar conversation and have similar interests (depending on the time of day, where the bar is located and the day of the week). Have fun, be safe and don’t be a jerk – that’s no way to make friends.

2 | Networking event

BEST MEET/MEAT MARKET
4th Street Bar & Grill | 433 4th St | 812.376.7063
By definition a meat market is a place where guys go to meet the ladies, and ladies show up to tease the guys. Pairing is done solely on the basis of physical attraction. The selection of quality meat in the butcher shop is a similar process.

Best KARAOKE
Ziggies| 3029 North National Road | 812.372-0898
Claiming the title for the second year in a row, Ziggies is the place to go to bust out your inner American Idol.
